Outdoor Adventures
The Forks, Maine
The Forks area is well-known for many outdoor activities, including whitewater rafting, hiking, and fishing. With close proximity to our friends at Three Rivers Whitewater, the Kennebec Riverside Cabins provide you with easy access to all that “The Recreation Capital of Maine” has to offer.

Kennebec River Whitewater Rafting
From May to October, The Forks draws people from around the country to experience one of Maine’s best rivers! The Kennebec River whitewater rafting trip is a full day adventure packed with class IV rapids and amazing views of pristine, remote Maine forest. This is the most popular rafting trip that Three Rivers Whitewater offers – perfect for anyone from first-time rafters to lifelong adrenaline junkies. It’s called Serious Fun for a reason! The Kennebec Riverside Cabins are so close to the action that the rafts will float by the Cabins in the flatwater section of the river at the end of the trip. A post-trip lunch is included with this trip.

Dead River Whitewater Rafting
The Dead River is only scheduled to be released a few times a year in the spring and in the fall, making it a special whitewater rafting experience. This 16-mile stretch of whitewater is nearly continuous with long rapids that include fun wave trains and holes to hit as well as many surfing opportunities. The release dates are scheduled several months in advance so be sure to keep an eye on our website for updated information at the beginning of the season. A post-trip lunch is included with this trip.

Lower Kennebec Inflatable Kayak Trip
If you’re looking for a whitewater adventure where you choose your adventure, the Lower Kennebec Inflatable Kayak Trip is for you! This trip starts downstream of most of the major rapids of the upper Kennebec River. You’ll paddle through a class III rapid, Black Brook Rapid, which features fun wave trains and spots to “surf.” After that, you’ll relax on a flatwater float back to The Forks. On the way back to the base, you’ll make a stop at Moxie Falls – a 90-foot single drop waterfall – before a post-trip lunch.

Lower Kennebec Float Trip
Not up for the full whitewater experience? The Lower Kennebec Float Trip is a relaxing journey down the flatwater section of the Kennebec River from The Forks to Wyman Lake. You’ll have time to sit back and relax while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Kennebec River. We often spot eagles along this section of the river, along with other birds and mammals. This trip is extra special in the fall, when you’ll enjoy a breathtaking display of foliage all along the river.

Guided Fishing Trips
With close access to the Kennebec River, Dead River, and many streams and lakes, the Kennebec Riverside Cabins are the perfect base for a day of fishing. With the experienced guides at Kennebec River Angler, you have the opportunity to catch some of Maine’s most challenging game species, including Landlocked Salmon, Native Brook Trout, and the ornery Small Mouth Bass. Guided Fishing Trips include your guide, boat, fishing equipment, and a picnic lunch.

Waterfall Excursion
Discover two amazing waterfalls in one day! You will first visit Moxie Falls, a 90-foot, single drop waterfall just a few minutes up the road from Kennebec Riverside Cabins. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to take in some amazing views, and also chances to swim in pools above the falls. Next, we’ll head to Grand Falls, a 40-foot tall, 100-foot wide horseshoe waterfall. Accessing both waterfalls requires short hikes that are both fairly easy, and we often run into wildlife along the way. Transportation and a meal are included with this trip

Guided Wilderness Hikes
Enjoy one of the area’s best hikes: Pleasant Pond Mountain. This moderate to strenuous hike is about 6 miles long roundtrip and follows the Appalachian Trail, which passes through the town of Caratunk just south of The Forks. Along the way, your guides will teach you about the wildlife in the area. At the summit, there are several lookouts where you can enjoy great views of The Forks region, the Kennebec River valley, and the surrounding mountain ranges. Lunch is included with this trip.
