Self Guided Adventures
The Forks, Maine
In addition to the Guided Activities available to you at Kennebec Riverside Cabins in the Recreation Capital of Maine, there are a multitude of self-guided adventures and recreational opportunities at your fingertips, for those of you who are bold enough to venture out into the wilderness on your own! From ATV rentals to river tubing to hiking to scenic drives, there is something fun and new for everyone, no matter the season, your budget, or how many times you return to us (that last one is inevitable).
Tubing
One of the coolest aspects of Kennebec Riverside Cabins is that your backyard IS the river and it’s not just for looking at! Tubing has become one of the most popular activities of The Forks in recent years, because it is a universal crowd-pleaser. Imagine yourself floating down the beautiful Kennebec River, a blue sky overhead, green pine trees lining the shores around you. You’re soaking in the sunshine, an ice-cold beverage in hand, laughing and splashing with your family and friends . You could hardly think of a more hassle-free and relaxing outdoor adventure than tubing! And to make it all the easier, you pick up your tubes right across the street at Inn by the River, start your float directly behind your cabin, and we pick you up 7 miles later.
Inflatable Kayaks
Inflatable Kayaks are awesome watercrafts to take out to explore The Forks by water. They are available directly across the street at Inn by the River, and if you choose to start your float in your backyard on the Lower Kennebec, there is a shuttle provided to pick you up at our take-out point. Otherwise, strap the kayak to your car and spend the day at any body of flatwater in the area- of which there are many! Moxie Lake, Indian Pond, Wyman Lake, or Grand Falls are a few. Exploring the beautiful Maine wilderness on your own in an inflatable kayak makes for an unforgettable adventure!
Stand Up Paddleboards
Another great way to get off land and on the water is through Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP). The fun part is that once you pick up your SUP just down the road at Three Rivers Whitewater, you have the freedom to choose what body of flat water to explore in The Forks! You could SUP directly behind your cabin on the Lower Kennebec or a few popular options in close proximity include Moxie Lake, Indian Pond, and Wyman Lake. Endless adventures await while SUPing: you could paddle out to islands on lakes, sit in the silent beauty of Maine forests, see eagles soaring overhead, watch a brilliant sunset reflecting off clear waters, or do some paddle board yoga.
Hiking
The Forks is a hiker’s heaven. From easy strolls through the forest to challenging summits, The Forks has every hiking level covered, many times over. Any visit to The Forks is incomplete without a short hike (1 mile RT) to the stunning Moxie Falls (where you can also swim and cliff jump!). Another short hike is to the incredible Grand Falls, known as the little Niagara Falls of Maine (1 mile RT). Other hikes with increasing difficulty include Mosquito Mountain (2.7 miles RT) and Pleasant Pond Mountain (3 miles RT), both of which lead to beautiful summit points, especially at sunrise or sunset. The Appalachian Trail also runs near The Forks, which provides an endless stretch of hiking. Grab your gear and hit those trails!

Wildlife Watching
The Forks is an incredible place for wildlife watching. Bald eagles are a very common sight on the Lower Kennebec, even possibly from your own back porch at Kennebec Riverside Cabins. On backroads, you may spot deer, ospreys, black bears, foxes, wild turkeys and all sorts of wildlife. And let’s not forget the majestic moose! Moose hunting (with your eyeballs from your vehicle) is a fun and engaging adventure at dusk that many like to participate in.
Fall Foliage
If you come to The Forks in autumn-time, watch out! You may never leaf. Fall foliage transforms the area with a multi-colored radiance. It gives a whole new look and feel to playing on the river, hiking, scenic drives, and every other outdoor adventure. Crispy, golden leaves, fresh fall air, and nature’s autumn-time perfume make it an exceptional visit at this time of year. There is nothing like a Maine autumn, so come experience it for yourself!
ATV Rentals
With the largest ATV trail system in the Northeast, ATV rentals are an exciting and popular recreational activity here in The Forks. The ATV clubs of the Upper Kennebec Valley have worked hard to create an extensive, interconnected trail system with well-marked trails that provide fun terrain for anyone with a hankering for dirt flying under their tires and bugs flying into their windshield.
